From idyllic, unspoilt beaches with turquoise seas and pure, white sands to bustling cities sporting exotic markets and a vibrant, colourful nightlife, it is easy to see why Thailand has become one of the most popular tourist destinations for the adventurous and young at heart.

A turbulent, and often bloody history has left Thailand scattered with ruins, forgotten temples and deserted cities that reveal a rich tableau of past eras to those willing to explore.

Thailand’s booming tourist economy, driven largely by Hollywood (the country has been the setting for The Man with the Golden Gun, The Bridge over River Kwai and most recently Alex Garland’s The Beach) has resulted in the opening of a number of expensive and luxurious international hotels. Those looking for the rustic splendour of the beaches and islands will find plenty of cheap and comfortable accommodation.

The size and geographical diversity of Thailand provides for a variety of activities. Snorkelling, diving and a host of watersports are very popular around the Islands, while inland enthusiasts can trek into the mountains or cycle across the flat river areas of the northeast.

Chaotic, carnal and congested, Thailand's capital is divided by the Chao Phraya River and is nestled in one of the world's most fertile rice-producing deltas. Bangkok's 579 square miles (1,500 sq km) are criss-crossed by a series of canals carrying passengers and cargo, its roads clotted with endless traffic jams, while the city sprawls in all directions with a hodge-podge of urban, commercial and industrial buildings. A new overland metropolitan railway speeds above the city, providing visitors with a relaxed and efficient way to observe the hustle and bustle below.
Edging up towards the boarders with Laos and Myanmar, the northern provinces boast some of Thailands's most beautiful scenery, with fertile plains, lush river valleys and dense jungle-clad mountains. Chang Mai is the largest city in the north and whilst offering urban sophistication, preserves its traditional heritage with numerous temples. The city is renowned for its street markets including its famous night bazaar, however it most importantly acts as a springboard for expeditions into the surrounding countryside and the Golden Triange
Pattaya is Thailand's liveliest resort holiday playground where you'll find plenty of bars and restaurants and for the active tennis, golf and riding. Watersports and the best beaches for swimming are easily reached by a short boat ride from Pattaya town to Coral Island, or about three miles drive to Jomtien beach. Brash and boisterous, Pattaya is a mecca for adults seeking fun and exciting entertainment with its vibrant nightlife and fair share of girlie bars
Cha-Am and Hua Hin are neighboring towns on the Gulf of Thailand, together known as 'Thailand's Riviera' and the country's oldest resort area.

Developed in the 1920s as a relaxing getaway for Bangkok's elite, the royal family was the first to embrace these two small fishing villages and each has maintained a quaint old world feeling with small streets to walk around.

In comparison to Pattaya, on the opposite shores of the Gulf, the laid-back twin resorts of Hua Hin and Cha-Am offer a far quieter, more relaxed retreat, far less developed and almost deserted during the week, but a popular weekend getaway for Bangkok residents. The clean sea and beaches support some excellent and unique resorts. Nearby is Phetchaburi, a fascinating bit of Thai history and culture.

Just one hours flight from Bangkok, off the east coast of Thailand lies this beautiful island. Not as lively as some of the other Thai resorts, Koh Samui is an ideal island for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

The glorious beaches and clear waters are ideal for swimming and there area a choice of suerb bars and local restaurants. Combine your beach holiday to Koh Samui with a stay in the bustling city of Bangkok or relax on another Thai beach

The tropical island of Phuket is just one hour's flight from Bangkok and is now linked to the mainland by a road bridge. Over the years the island has developed rapidly with lively resort such as Patong Beach providing numerous restaurants, bars and lively nightlife. However, there are also some peaceful and idyllic locations where you can relax on a quiet palm-fringed sandy beach enjoying this seemingly perfect island retreat.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful beach resorts in Thailand, Krabi has clear waters and glorious sandy beaches framed by incredible limestone scenery. If you really want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. Less commercialised than other Thai resorts and amazing natural scenery mean Krabi is an ideal retreat, however, there are plenty of local bars and restaurants to enjoy when you are feeling sociable. As with all of the Thai resorts, you can combine your holiday in Krabi with other destinations in Thailand
Travel by boat from Phuket to the spectacular islands of Phi Phi or Maiton. Sunbathe on glorious sandy beaches or swim and snorkel in crystal clear warm waters surrounding both islands.

These islands are two ideal retreats for a relaxing beach holiday and for those who want seclusion. There are excellent watersports and diving off Phi Phi island, which is famed for its amazing underwater coral formations.
